Getting right down to brass tacks this month.
March 28th: No Kings 3 is on like Donkey Kong.
Find your crew. Make your sign. Warm up your vocal cords. It’s time to shout it from the rooftops…we will not tolerate authoritarian rule in this country!
My family and I are going, and I’m bringing 3 friends with me. Who’s going with you?
In Song of Achilles, Madeline Miller so brilliantly writes the following dialogue:
“No man is worth more than another wherever he is from,” says Chiron.
“But what if he is your friend?,” asked Achilles. “Or your brother? Should you treat him the same as a stranger?”
Chiron replies, “He is worth more to you, perhaps. But the stranger is someone else’s friend and brother. So which life is more important?”
They want us to feel isolated and alone. Because, deep down, they know that passionate, committed humans fighting for good are stronger than their evil. Know that there is a community of fighters, believers, and compassionate individuals around you.
Some may be comfortable attending a protest or a rally, while others prefer to donate, writer letters, or make calls. Let me know how you’re choosing to get involved, to light your soul on fire. I would love to be your accountability partner, cheerleader, or community—whatever you need.
Resources & Ways to Take Action
In February and March, I attended a community hub meeting organized by Boots on the Ground Midwest (a part of the larger Indivisible organization). I found it reassuring to be among community, and they are really digging in and taking a stance against ICE in Kansas and Kansas City, in particular.
I encourage you to find your own Indivisible group and see what they’re up to.
March 10th at 5pm: If you’re in Kansas or even the Missouri side of KC, show up to oppose the opening of CoreCivic’s ICE detention center in Leavenworth. The city council will vote to approve the permit, and, if approved, the detention center opens immediately. Boots on the Ground Midwest is organizing a protest outside the building.
Now: Get informed about authoritarianism from The 10 Steps Campaign. It’s led by author, activist, and former Georgia House Minority Leader, Stacy Abrams.
March 28th: No Kings 3. Let me know if you’re in the Johnson County, KC Metro area, and we can rally together.
Check out this interview from The Innocence Project with Albert Woodfox who spent 45 years wrongfully incarcerated in solitary confinement. He poignantly says, “Nothing has changed except the technology. How can I come out in society, and realize that the same forces that oppress my ancestors are still here active as ever?”
Find your local Indivisible group. Here’s BOTG Midwest.
A reader shared this newly created organization that documents unprecedented changes in federal civil rights enforcement. It’s founded by former Justice Department civil rights leaders:
